Tuesday 18 February
Today we boarded our traditional grass houseboat on the Kerala Backwaters. After a few minutes this was already a highlight of our trip. The company is called Spice Route and they only do proper 1or 2 bedroom grass boats, no bigger cruises.
The Backwaters are beautiful. The water looks clean, there's no plastic waste floating and things are rural and quiet. We just watch local life as we motor by. There are a lot of rice paddies and the bird life is great. We opted to buy some beer and wine for the trip. There's even sugar free 7 Up for my shandy.
We hopped off the boat for a while in Kalloorkad to visit St.Mary's Basilica, built in the 1700s on the site where Syrian Christians set up a church over a 1000 years ago.
