GREECE 2026 : EAT IN CRETE

Saturday 15 to Friday 21 August
Crete has been named National Geographic Foodie Capital of the World for 2026. And we are loving it! Fresh ingredients all locally grown. The best Oregano..No chain restaurants or fast food. Independant little tavernas and restaurants. Relaxed meals at great prices. Outdoor dining on balmy evenings.
Up in the mountains in the village of Drakona is Ntounias.Chef Stelios cooks on an open fire. We tried fried goat, beef stew and pork cooked in orange sauce. Home baked sourdough bread with spicy cheese. Dakos; a version of Greek salad served on a flat barley rusk reminiscent of Italian bruchetta. Cheese pie with honey for dessert. All washed down with a carafe of local white wine. We did a tour and wine tasting at Pnevmatikakis Winery. Great wines especially the Greek varietals like Assyrtiko and Vidiano.
Next door to our villa is Akrogiali Fish Taverna.
In Kissimos we tried Cellar Cafe. We took a drive south to Palichora one day and had another delicious dinner at Masa Soura. On Friday we had dinner at excellent Maracaibo in Koleni a few kms from the villa.
We went to a local butcher in Kissimos and as Saffers do, we had a few excellent braais.
Otherwise we loved the fresh fruit, local cheeses and olives. All enjoyed on our deck.
