INDIA 2025 : COCHIN,KERALA

Thursday 13 February
We had a 5.15am pick up for the flight to Kerala. We arrived at Hotel Vivanta in Ernakulum, New Cochin in time for lunch. We don't mind buffets in India because there's so much to try. We went to Old Cochin for the afternoon. The last time we were here was almost 20 years ago.We visited the Fort and wandered around the colonial areas. Remnants of Portuguese, Dutch and British influence are evident but I got the sense from our guide that Keralans are more proud of the modern development of the city. The lanes in Jewtown are just crammed with tourist shops. Not much authenticity is left. We did visit the old synagogue there though. One tour guide was using a megaphone inside!
We went to the beach at sunset. I have never seen a more filthy beach and the promenade wasn't  appealing either. The old historic Chinese fishing nets only remain for the sake of tourists and any fish sold there now is brought in from somewhere else. Locals prefer the new fish shops and restautants on the new side of town. We did find a pub for a beer. We probably would have enjoyed the vibrant night market just near our hotel much more but travel fatigue set in and we had room service instead.
