SOUTH AMERICA 2024 : CHILE LAKE DISTRICT

Tuesday 13 February
We drove a few hours south into the Chilean lake district. We had lunch in Villarrica. It was very, very crowded due to the school holidays. We had pancakes for dessert because it's Shrove Tuesday. Moving on we went to Frutillar. A mostly working class holiday crowd here and the beaches were packed. On to Puerto Varas, where we spent the night.  A much more upmarket place. Not unlike the lakes south of Munich. There is a lot of German influence in these areas. Over the 19th century quite a few Germans settled in Chile and today about 5% of Chileans are of German descent. Pisco-sours and sunset. Live music at Pims Bar.
Covers of Eagles and Police and Creedance and Wham! Here's something I love about Chile. Everywhere you go the music is 70s and 80s pop. In posh restaurants and local bars! The radio stations play 70s and 80s pop. All the time.
Wednesday 14 February
Chileans have a sweet tooth and cakes feature on the breakfast buffets. Neil had a pink donut for Valentine's day! We have this madcap scheme to drive around Northern Patagonia. Not able to finalise things on- line, I booked the ferries at the office at Puerto Montt. Who does that anymore?
Then we drove to Pargua and took the ferry to Grand Isla de Chiloe. It's much more populated than we expected; the whole island is dotted with small farms and holiday houses. We stayed at the very cool Estancia Rilan Boutique Hotel. It is Valentine's day after all. They had great Chilean wine by the glass and good food too.
