SOUTH AMERICA 2024: NORTHERN PATAGONIA PART 1

Thursday 15th February
Chiloe
We spent the day driving around Chiloe Island.  The Chiloe churches have World Heritage status; made of wood and painted in bright colours. We spent the night in shabby and faded Castro; also known for it's colourful buildings. We found a local bar for good piscos and ate huge burgers in a local cafe. Hotel de Castro looks like it was built in the 80s and it hasn't had an upgrade since then but it was located near the ferry terminal.
Friday16th February
Tickets state you need to arrive at the ferry terminal an hour before departure. You don't! We took the car ferry from Castro to Chaiten. A slow and comfy journey on a flat ocean with awesome views.  We were told it takes 5 hours. It took 7 hours.  En route we saw dolphins, seals, penguins and quite a few more sea birds. We were happy to have filled up the car in Castro because there were long queues of cars at the fuel station in Chaiten waiting for a petrol delivery.  The only way you can access this area of Northern Patagonia is by ferry or small plane.
Driving South from Chaiten to La Junta is the most amazing scenic route. The road is newly paved almost all the way.
Our hotel, Alto Melimoyu, just off Routa 7, the Austral Highway, is really nice. The hotel is new very cozy and the bar and restaurant are good. The soundtrack is 70s rock. What's with Chile and the music? They only ever play my favourite music genres!
The Swifties, Hip Hop and K Pop fans would hate it here!!
