Morocco 2023 : Part 10 : Day trip to Volubilis and Domaine de la Zouina

 Friday 3 March

It's a 2 hour drive from Fez to Volubilis, a Roman city ruin dating back to the 2nd and 3rd century AD. The site was much larger and more impressive than expected; most of it hasn't been rebuilt and you can really walk around and explore, even climb onto the ruins. This was one of the furtherest outposts of the Roman Empire and was known for production of wheat and olive oil, both still produced in the area today.

South of Meknes we visited a winery; Domaine de la Zouina and spent a most pleasant few hours tasting wine and enjoying delicious local goat's cheeses. The great thing here is that the tasting for four includes a whole bottle of each varietal! Rose, Gris, Syrah and Cab Sav. Stephen kindly volunteered to be the designated driver. Neil and I try to visit wineries in all the countries we travel to and so this was a special treat.

We had dinner back at our riad and finished off a bottle of wine we brought home from our tasting.

Hammam style bathroom in the riad.
View of the dining area with our bedroom entrance.
Our en suite was up a spiral staircase.
