Morocco: Part 11 : Chefchaouen

Saturday 4 March

Fez to Chefchaouen

Leaving Fez, we took a secondary road through farming countryside. Progress was slow but sometimes we do enjoy the road less travelled. Neil is an excellent and calm driver under any conditions.

On approach Chefchaouen was larger and less beautiful than expected.

We parked and entered the old medina on foot. Chefchaouen is an ancient town, established in 1471. This was the biggest Jewish settlement in North Africa until Moroccan independance but no-one is quite sure how or when blue became a thing here. But old Chefchaouen is very blue, very photogenic and very touristy these days. We are staying at the lovely Casa Sibila Riad, right in the Old Medina. We had a great evening wandering the streets and taking photos.

There are hardly any places that serve alcohol but we found Restaurant Oum Rabie with the help of Google search and Google maps. ( We dubbed it Oom Rabie se Kroeg. ) A bit dodgy, up some dingy stairs; this is a dive bar Moroccan style. It all felt rather illicit. You can't order liquor without food, so we tucked into the free bar snacks too.

Our landlord had recommended Bab Ssour for dinner. We sat up on the rooftop terrace to catch the sunset. Excellent food at such reasonable prices.
It's hilly here and our riad is high up so the evening stroll back home is always going to involve uphill walking and stairclimbing.

Sunday 5 March

Chefchaouen

Having an extra night in Chefchaouen meant we could have a slow, restful Sunday.

Town was full of day trippers. We took a walk and stopped for a long coffee break on the main square. The restaurant owners were grumpy and rude, probably because we didn't order lunch. We bought a blue rug.

We found our trip slogan.

And a goat.

We had a glass of wine in our room. We went  for an early dinner at Sinibad Restaurant. Soup, salad and meat skewers.

All over Morocco we've had delicious oranges, served with cinnamon; a delicious dessert.
