Amazing Family Safari in Botswana August 2022 : part 4 : O Bona Moremi, Khwai River, Okavango Delta

Day 8 to10, Wednesday 24th to Friday 26th August

We drove via Maun with a chance to stock up on drinks and snacks. About 10kms outside Maun the tar road ends and the fun begins. This road is bad, even with a 4x4. Four bone rattling hours to do 150 kilometres. But really worth it for such a special piece of African wilderness.
O Bona is a small tented camp in the Khwai Conservancy and the wonderful, friendly staff really make this place special. The first afternoon we did an organised game drive.

The water levels in the delta are pretty high so we did have to do some water crossings.

We found a female lion and her 3 little cubs. She was taking them across the water for the first time.

5.30am wake up calls, 6am breakfasts and
6.30am sunrise game drives are how the day starts at O Bona.

After more lion sightings we headed over to the western area in search of leopard but after lots of tracking they remained elusive.

In the afternoon the London Greenfields went off for a mokoro trip and we did a self drive in the conservancy.

On Friday, Nick and Kerry left early for the long drive down south and we spent the day in Moremi NP. The area around North Gate was really beautiful with lots of water in the delta.

In the afternoon we were lucky enough to see a wild dog kill.
Charles and I were happy to discover that they didn't charge corkage at the lodge. The manager was really confused by our request to pay to drink our own wine. How we laughed when we were settling our bill and realised that our all- inclusive rate included all drinks anyway.
Look out for SADC special rates.

Amazing Family Safari in Botswana August 2022 : Part 3 : Mkgadigadi NP - Boteti River

Day 7 : Tuesday 23 August
Without full camping kit the drive through Savuti from Chobe to Khwai is not plausible.
Driving around via Mkgadigadi NP takes no longer and you get to experience another fantastic park. You enter the park off the A3. The zebra migration along the Boteti River is just fantastic. The area is teeming with game in August. You have to cross the river from the Kumaga Gate to get to Boteti River Camp. ( www.bushways.com ) They have nice, simple bungalows with outdoor bathrooms with dinner and breakfast included.

Amazing Family Safari in Botswana August 2022 : Part 2 : Chobe and Victoria Falls

Friday 19 August to Monday 22 August : Day 3 to 6
It's a 3 hour journey to Kasane from Elephant Sands.
We always like to stay at Chobe Safari Lodge.
A sunset cruise on the Chobe River should be on your bucket list! You must do private boat cruises on the Chobe; don't book through the hotel.
I recommend Mandela for all your cruises, fishing trips and excursions. +267 72 817 000 or kgowetravel@gmail.com.
A day trip into Chobe NP is a must.  We were lucky to see this lioness and her 3 subadult cubs on the banks of the river.
Game is plentiful along the river.
These guys are part of the Serondella pride.
A jaffle picnic next to the river.
End the day with GnTs.
Many people opt to do Victoria Falls from Kasane. I suggest using Mandela for these arrangements too, as it makes the border crossing into Zim hassle free.
Nick and Kerry did a guided day trip to the falls with a helicopter flip too.
The Greenfield clan spent the night at the colonial Victoria Falls Hotel and a day of White Water Rafting on the Zambezi.
We hung out at the hotel in Kasane and went fishing for Tigerfish.
The buffet dinners at the hotel get boring but there aren't a lot of good restaurants in Kasane. Try The Old House or stock up on cheese and wine at the Spar and have your own party in the room.
