Zambia is a big country and travelling the Great Eastern Road all the way to South Luangwe and all the way back to Livingstone takes 6 days of driving. We didn't want to be on the road for more than 7 hours a day but some days this did stretch to 8 hours. The main roads in Zambia ( there are no highways) are way better than in Zimbabwe but they are single lane and busy; with no hard shoulder. Progress is slow especially through all the towns and villages. The journey itself is a great experience; you learn so much about the country and it's people and some stuff about yourself too.
Fly-in safaris are never this enriching.
Be prepared with padkos and snacks and lots of cold drinks. And music and podcasts. We also chat a lot about upcoming trips and plans and get some admin done. We have walkie talkies in each car to keep in touch as we go. Especially when one car needs a pee break.
We had fun on all our overnight stops. We watched the Springboks beat NZ in rugby two Saturdays in a row in the bar at Eureka Campsite outside Lusaka. We tried some local cuisine at the Chimwemwe Hotel in Petuaka.
