Monday 19th to Wednesday 21st May
This is the way to enjoy your journey; just a few hundred kms a day. Even potholey roads are better than rutted gravel. And the route between Boteti and Planet Baobab is not busy with trucks. Always a compulsory stop for selfies with the pink aardvark.
Planet Baobab had a fire in November 2024 that destroyed the reception, bar and restaurant areas. They have started to rebuild but the place has sadly lost it's quirkiness. We had time to laze around the pool, which was spared in the fire. And enjoy camp cooking; Italian style. Veal Tonnato to start, Lasagne and pasta salad for main and Hanlie's passionfruit pannecotta for dessert.
Planet Baobab to Nata Lodge is another easy hop. We bought a beef fillet from Fouries Butchery in Nata. Fillet is a good cut to buy if you are "shopping local" in Africa because it's never tough and it's usually cheap because it's not a favourite - "Nyama" must be on the bone in this part of the world.
Nata Lodge is a wonderful stopover. In the afternoon we took a trip into Nata Bird Sanctuary. We saw lots of wildebeest; not so many birds...but the pan landscape is awesome... the openness, the solitude, it expands your being! We had sunset drinks near the river mouth. And another super braai - the fillet - back at camp..
Nata Lodge to Woodlands Camp near Francistown is only 160kms so we had a nice slow morning. We had the afternoon to pack and sort- we are going to a lodge where we can take our cars in but the caravans will be left at a base camp. It's our last night of this camping safari..sitting around the fire..chicken jalfrezi with roti for dinner; followed by magnum icecreams. I think we do the best camp cooking in Africa!
