USA 2025 : MEMPHIS, TN

Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th March
Heading to Memphis we cruised straight to Graceland. Sometimes you just have to do the touristy thing. It's great being here out of season; no crowds. We started in the cafeteria with a lunch of toasted peanut butter and banana sandwiches; Elvis' favourite snack.
Apart from a tour of the house there's a fabulous museum, including his cars, awards, outfits and lots about his movies.
We got to downtown Memphis just in time to catch the last tour of Sun Studios, arguably the birthplace of Rock 'n Roll, when Sam Phillips recorded "Rocket 88" by The Delta Cats in 1951. Elvis' first hit "That's alright Mama" was recorded here in 1954.
You can't go to Memphis without having BBQ at Central. Or catching live music on Beale St. We loved the band at Rum Boogie. And there's always room for midnight desserts in the lobby lounge.
We stayed at the Peabody Hotel. This hotel is famous for the ducks in the lobby lounge fountain. Every morning at 11am they are escorted from their home on the roof down to the fountain for the day and return upstairs at 5pm.
On Tuesday it was Stax Studios and The Rock and Soul Museum. A little more BBQ at Arnold's and a great dinner at Flights where everything is available in 3's, including salads, soups and mains as well as all the wines. And more music on Beale.
On Wednesday morning we went to the poignant Civil Rights Museum built around the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in 1968.
