Mozambique 2024 : Part 1 : Getting There

Wednesday 25th September to Sunday 29th September
It's never going to be a short trip up to Vilankoulos, so enjoy the journey... We are travelling with Hanlie and Andrew in one car, so squeezing ALL our luggage in to the cruiser was a challenge. Let's just, say none of us are used to traveling light on a road trip.
Wednesday
We spent the night at TFFC in Dullstroom; the trout fishing "club" we've been members of since 1990. This year Neil has become  a pensioner member! We met up with Johan and Ronell for a long overdue catch up and a belated Birthday celebration for Ronell.
Thursday
Today we travelled up to Letaba Camp in the Kruger Park, via the Phalaborwe gate.
Neither Hanlie nor I thought of contacting them ahead of check-in to secure rondawels next to each other, so we find ourselves at opposite ends of a very large camp. Numbers 28 and 90! This requires driving to them for dinner on account of all the wine, beer and whisky, oh and also salad and braai meat, that needed to schlepped between huts.
Friday
Game drives morning and afternoon. The park is very, very dry but we do see quite a lot of game and birds. Johan and Ronell join us for the night.  Hanlie and Andrew's friends Carol and Dirk and their friends who are camping in Letaba also come over for a braai.
Saturday
Up early and on the road by 7.30am, we drive to the Giriyondo border post which is within the Kruger. This is one of the best (ie fast and simple) borders you'll find in Southern Africa and we are soon in Mozambique; traversing the Limpopo Transfrontier Park. To use this border you need to pay Park fees on both sides and spend at least 1 night in either park.
The tar road from Massingir Dam to Macia is quiet and not too potholed.
We arrived at lovely Mukumbura Lodge in Bilene mid afternoon with time to settle in and watch the Springboks beat Argentina to lift the Rugby Championship trophy.
Peri-peri chicken dinner and a bottle of Gateo vino verde to celebrate our win.
And an early night..
Sunday
It's still a long drive to Vilankoulos from Bilene. 600kms that takes 9 hours. The Sunday roads are quiet but the EN1 passes through many, many towns and villages where the speed limit drops to 60kms an hour. We are heading back to Villas do Indico, 10kms north of town; a spot we fell in love with on last year's trip.
