Roadtripping Iceland: Day 1: Monday 29th May: The South

We were travelling for a week with Dylan ( our nephew)and Paul. We caught a late night flight to Iceland from Heathrow on Sunday 28 May.  The Aurora Hotel is very convenient for an overnight stay when checking in at midnight. The next day we collected a car from Go Rentals.
Lots of people recommended Iceland to us; some even gave us their itineraries but no-one mentioned the extreme weather! Rain, wind, snow, barely any sunshine, midnight twilight... It's the most stark thing about Iceland! Another thing is the very weird and unfamiliar sounding language with place names being impossible to read, pronounce or remember properly. Hence there will probably be some errors in my trip report but that shouldn't put you off going. Iceland is unique. In the morning we drove around Reykjanes Penninsula.
There are only a few places in the world where the continental divide is on land and not under the ocean. Here is where North American and European tectonic plates meet.
The lava landscape is so other worldly.
Fagradalsfjall is an active volcano. Heavy cloud cover meant we could not see the top but you can see the molten and cooling lava flow.
Tommie's Bar in Selfoss does good hamburgers for lunch. Another tip - Food (and drinks) in Iceland is super expensive so self cater some meals if you can.
In the afternoon we stopped at Skogafoss and the glacier lagoon at Jokulsarlon.
We spent the night at Gerdi Guesthouse just west of Hofn.
