Leaving Serengeti and driving to Hhando Coffee Lodge it was back along the horrendous road through the Ngorogoro Conservancy. Hhando is a coffee plantation near the rim of the Crater. Densely forested and at 2300m above sea level, it was so much cooler at night. Rondawel style rooms in lush gardens. On Tuesday we left before sunrise for our day in Ngorogoro Crater NP. What am awesome place! Arriving early allows you to enjoy the park for a few hours before the hoards of vehicles arrive. Entry permits only allow a stay of six hours to try and limit vehicle numbers. The dirt track winds down into the base of the volcano, a circular, fertile valley; abundant with game and surrounded by mountains. The lakes also support an amazing variety of bird life.
Within the first hour we had already seen two sets of lions. Then when we stopped at a rest area for a bathroom break, while scanning the trees for birds with binoculars, I spotted two lions on the hill behind the bathrooms. None of the guides seemed too worried that they would make their down to us.
